Not All Caching is Created EqualPosted
Within a data network, what difference does it make where the decision to cache data is made? If it is a virtualized environment, it makes a significant difference.
Virtualization has completely changed the way compute resources are deployed, utilized, and managed. While this change has delivered significant benefits, it has highlighted that spinning disk is simply too slow to adequately deliver data quickly enough to virtualized applications in order to keep the compute processors working at optimal throughput. As a result, the marketplace is becoming crowded with “Caching” solutions. These solutions generally take the form of

New ioMemory Product Doubles Capacity, Packing up to 20 TB of ioMemory Performance in a 1U Server to Accelerate Highly Large Data Sets
SEATTLE – Nov. 15, 2011
Fusion-io today announced the 10 TB ioDrive Octal, delivering up to 20 TB of flash-based acceleration in a 1U server, such as the Supermicro SuperServer 6016GT-TF. The 10 TB ioDrive Octal features double the ioMemory capacity and density, integrating eight 1.28 TB MLC ioMemory modules in a single double-wide PCIe device, to deliver increased capacity in the small footprint.

Fusion-io nieuws: Speeding up Writes Using Read Caching
Gary Orenstein, VP van Fusion-io schrijft het volgende op zijn blog:
As caching with server side flash becomes more prevalent, including our own upcoming ioTurbine software, it is important to keep a few big picture themes in mind.
> Read caching offers a number of advantages such as:
> Retaining existing disk infrastructure as-is;
> Retaining a single source of truth by only persisting data in one location;
> Simple scenarios for data-in-flight;
and…
> Better write performance.

Fusion-io directCache, official release Linux/Windows
Product Description
Fusion IO directCache is a software add-on module for our VSL driver that enables an ioMemory device to act as a cache in front of a larger storage volume called a backing store. The backing store volume can be any block storage device, ranging from a single local hard drive within the server to a RAID array, an iSCSI or FibreChannel attached LUN on a SAN. The only backing store limitation is that it cannot be concurrently access shared storage (i.e. it does not work with Oracle RAC). directCache requires the 2.3.0 VSL driver or later to run.
Major Features
• Support for Windows and Linux (does not yet work on VMware or Solaris)
• 1-to-1 Mapping (each ioMemory module can only cache a single host level volume)
• Write through cache mode
• Power cut safe
Licensing
Fusion IO directCache is a separately sold and licensed software module and is only available to customers who purchase it. directCache is licensed "per ioMemory Module" meaning an ioDrive would require one license. An ioDrive Duo would require two licenses if the customer wanted to use both ioMemory modules in directCache mode. However, customers do not have to purchase two licenses if they only want to use one of the ioMemory modules on the Duo in directCache mode. When the customer purchases directCache they will need to provide the serial number of the ioMemory device that they want to generate the license file for. The license file is an encrypted XML file that is installed into the ioMemory card metadata and becomes a permanent feature of the device.
Maintenance
The purchase of a directCache license does not entitle the customer to free updates in perpetuity like the VSL. To obtain periodic updates (i.e. minor feature improvements and bug fixes), the customer must also purchase an Annual Software Maintenance Subscription, which must be renewed each year.
SKUs
There are two SKUs, one for the directCache software license and one for the annual software maintenance subscription.
• FS0101: directCache Software (priced per ioMemory module)
• FS0102: directCache Annual Maintenance Subscription (priced per ioMemory module)
